2016 Design Retrospective

Format releases 2016 retrospective and looks back on what will be remembered as the greatest design year of all time… maybe.

Format is taking a look back at the epic year creatives had in 2016. We’ve rounded up the most iconic, innovative and awe-inspiring design moments of the year. Spoiler: it gets a bit weird. The site itself subverts normal website conventions and lets visitors navigate the bombastic, tongue-in-cheek retrospective in 3D.

With the 2016 design retrospective, the design team at Format decided to approach this project with a brand new aesthetic–no design at all. With huge type–in Arial of course–and aggressive flashing, not to mention mind bending 3D elements, the retrospective aims to take the user on a journey through the most iconic design moments of 2016. There are hidden easter eggs throughout the site and pop-ups that are tongue-in-cheek and 100% intentional. With the “hottest” design trends ready to be tweeted with just one click of a button, the 2016 design retrospective is anything but serious.
